A half hour later, Josie and I had given our statements to the police, and Sheena had been led away, escorted by an officer on each side. They hadn’t put her in cuffs, and I had no idea if she’d serve jail time, but at least the mystery was solved.

Josie and I joined the rest of the crowd by the disc jockey’s table. Mrs. Fielding was standing there in front of the microphone, with the king and queen ballot box in her hands. Suddenly, I realized that I’d forgotten to vote. Oh well. Let Amanda enjoy her costly victory.

Rob came forward and put his arm around Josie, and she snuggled against him. I was starting to feel like a third wheel. “Be back in a minute. I’m going outside to look for Mike.”

Josie gazed at me with concerned blue eyes. “But they’re getting ready to announce the king and queen. Don’t you want to see if you won?”

I shook my head. “We already know that Amanda’s got it in the bag.” Even if we won, Mike had already been expelled from the prom and wouldn’t be able to dance with me, so what did it even matter?

Josie shrugged. “Okay. Good luck.”

I skirted my way around the crowd, which extended out beyond the French doors and around the deck. A few couples remained on the dance floor outside, but the music had been turned down low in anticipation for the big announcement. The full moon in the sky cascaded down upon me, and with the outdoor lighting, it was easy to make out the cars in the adjoining lot. I walked past Rob’s Ford truck and spotted Mike’s Chevy a few spots behind it. The truck was empty.

Panic grew inside me as my eyes scanned the semi darkened lot. Mike did have quite a bit of the spiked punch to drink. Maybe he’d wandered off, upset and depressed, into the darkness. I cursed to myself. I shouldn’t have left him alone.

“Mike?” I called out into the night. There was a lake about half a mile away, past the golf course. What if he’d been so drunk that he’d fallen in? Okay, calm down, Sal. He can swim ten times better than you. But where is he?

I had just decided to go back into the ballroom and grab Josie when I saw movement in the back of Brenda Snyder’s vehicle. Ew. That girl was busier than my mother in the bikini section of Macy’s. I started to walk away, but doubt nagged at my brain. No, it couldn’t be. My imagination was working overtime.

Quietly, I approached Brenda’s car. With the moon shining directly into the back window, I spotted her sitting on someone’s lap. Big surprise there. She was giggling, and her strapless dress was down around her waist. Cripes. Couldn’t she wait until later like everyone else?

My mouth was dry as I reached for the door handle. I didn’t want to look but had to satisfy my curiosity. Brenda’s body blocked the guy’s face from my view.
